Living Stories that change lives

Mary Jane Brockman

The article is written by Mary Jane Brockman. Her husband, Bill, went to high school with Forest’s dad in Yosemite National Park and became best friends. Forest’s dad died about 30 years ago and Bill and Mary Jane (now in their mid 80s) have pursued health and are still alive to enjoy and write this short story below.

We visited our wilderness cabin. Our cabin can only be reached on a road that gets quite narrow, crossing a bridge that looks impossible but if you have a high enough center, aim carefully, you can make it.

We reach the trailhead and shoulder our packs and hike about ¼ mile through a dense spruce and cedar tunnel trail. Then we cross a log deck with moss, lichen and ferns.  The logs bridge a small ravine and stream. I always feel like Alice in Wonderland. After crossing the logs, we enter another world – a world of timelessness.

As we hike in, we hear the loud roar of the ocean until…there it is, the beautiful and infinite sea and our special place. Our cabin is open to all. We keep a “log” and through the years we have had people come from all over the world.

In the morning with the rain falling and as I was on my way to the outhouse, I wondered – is there toilet paper? Taking nothing for granted, I tucked the roll of tp in my rain jacket and ventured forth.

Of course this opened up my thoughts to my life and the awareness of ‘don’t take anything for granted’ – your health, family, or life. It is indeed magical how each day unfolds.

The experience of coming to the wilderness cabin ushers me into the feeling of no beginning and no ending. We are grateful for shelter, warmth, family, and life. As stated in our cabin log – ‘Sing! Dance! Love! Laugh! And rest well”
