Hydration - Your Liquid Lifeline!

Next to oxygen, water is the most important factor for survival. A person can do without food for five weeks or more, but without water, hydration he can survive for only a few days. The longer an individual goes without water, the greater the number and severity of symptoms.

Symptoms of dehydration usually begin with thirst and progress to more alarming manifestations as the need for water becomes more dire. The initial signs and symptoms of mild dehydration in adults appear when the body has lost about 2% of its total fluid. These mild dehydration symptoms include (but are not limited to):

If the dehydration is allowed to continue unabated, when the total fluid loss reaches 5%, the following moderate dehydration effects are normally experienced:
  • Increased Heart Rate
  • Increased Respiration
  • Decreased Sweating
  • Decreased Urination
  • Increased Body Temperature
  • Extreme Fatigue
  • Muscle Cramps
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Tingling of the Limbs

Many common symptoms are simply your body crying out for WATER!! To ensure you are consuming adequate water, follow this equation:

Your body weight = number of ounces/day
            2

Example: 150# divided by 2 – 75 ounces of water (about 8 glasses)
