Everyone wants soft, healthy, and vibrant skin at any age. It has built a $17 Billion-a-year industry!

I was one of those consumers in the skin care industry – looking for the next miracle fix. From serums to lotions to creams to cosmetics, anything to hide the wrinkle and aging. My genetics didn’t help me in this journey, so I invested heavily in the skincare market. The frustration was that I couldn’t tell the difference, and I was spending a lot of money!

What’s sad is that many of those products not only under-deliver but also add more toxicity for the body to address. Are you aware of the top toxic ingredients damaging your skin?

Here are some of the top toxic ingredients in skincare and cosmetics that you should avoid:

  • Phthalates: are used in products to increase flexibility and softness. Some are suspected of being endocrine (hormone) disruptors.
  • Parabens (methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, ethylparaben): These are used as preservatives. They penetrate the skin and act like a weak estrogen in the body, potentially leading to hormonal imbalances
  • Formaldehyde: is used in many cosmetics to prevent bacteria growth. The chemical was declared a human carcinogen (cancer-causing substance) by the International Agency for Research on Carcinogens (IARC), and it can also cause allergic skin reactions.
  • Sodium Laurel Sulfate (SLS): can cause irritation or trigger allergies.
  • Synthetic Fragrances: are among the top five allergens in the world and are known to contribute to asthma and other health issues.
  • Toluene: is a solvent and neurotoxicant that can impair breathing and cause nausea.
  • Lead and other heavy metals: can accumulate over years and are linked with many health issues.
  • Hydroquinone: is commonly used in skin lighteners and is one of the most toxic ingredients in personal care products.

The underlying issue is over the years, our bodies have become more toxic, good fats have been vilified, and nutrient deficiencies abound, causing more and more skin problems Our diets have played a huge role in this.

  • Saturated fats have acquired a bad name. However, 25% of most cells in our body are made of saturated fat. Saturated fat holds our cells together and plays a crucial role in maintaining soft and supple skin. Saturated fats are found in coconut oil, butter, poultry, dairy, and fatty cuts of meat. These sources need to be organic, grass-fed, or wild-caught to be healthy sources of saturated fat for your body and health.
  • Omega 3s also contribute to the elasticity of our skin, helping to maintain the structural integrity of our skin and reduce the visibility of lines and wrinkles. Omega 3 fatty acids can be found in fatty fish (i.e., salmon, mackerel, sardine), walnuts, flaxseeds, and chia seeds. Most people are getting way to many Omega 6’s today and throwing this balance off.
  • Collagen is also helpful, as it is the most abundant protein in our bodies, playing a vital role in maintaining elasticity, firmness, and overall youthfulness. However, only about 20% of collagen powders are utilized to build new collagen in the body, the rest being converted to energy sources such as sugars or body fat. To make new collagen, we need the essential amino acids necessary to repair any damage to our skin and keep our skin healthy, soft, firm, and elastic. More on this in another newsletter.
