Do you have trouble sleeping? Or maybe you struggle with depression or anxiety? The issues might be caused by your gut and a missing bacteria called Lactobacillus Reuteri (L. Reuteri).

L. Reiteri plays a massive role in not only our gut health but also our brain health. Our brain is heavily affected by our gut because of the connection to the vagus nerve. If our gut is unhealthy, our brain is unhealthy too. So, what can we do to get L. Reuteri in our gut?

L. Reuteri Yogurt! We have found an easy recipe to make L. Reuteri yogurt at home.

My initial interest in L. Reuteri yogurt started with a video of Dr. Berg and Dr. Davis. They talked about how many people have improved their sleep by adding the microbiome L. Reuteri into their gut. A research study at MIT showed that adding L. Reuteri to mice’s diets significantly impacted their sleep, bone density, muscle strength, skin quality, fur quality, and matting drive. The study also noted that when the mice died, the old mice looked much more like the young mice. This inspired us to try making the L. Reuteri yogurt!

The results have been incredible! We are seeing better sleep and better gut health with ourselves and our clients. Below is our EASY recipe! You can also watch our step-by-step video on how to make the best L. Reuteri yogurt along with the tips and tricks we have learned. ENJOY!

For more information about L. Reuteri and gut health, we recommend reading Super Gut by Dr. William Davis and watching Dr. Berg and Dr. Davis’ video.

L. Reuteri Yogurt Recipe

Equipment

  • Yogurt Maker
    • Either the 6-oz jars or one-quart containers work great
    • We have a set of both (extra jars) since we typically start a new batch before we’ve finished the current batch.

Ingredients

Directions
First Batch (Starter Batch)

  1. Open one capsule of the probiotic L. Reuteri into a medium-sized bowl.
  2. Add one tablespoon of the prebiotic inulin into the bowl.
  3. From the quart of half-and-half, add three tablespoons to the bowl.
  4. Mix until smooth.
  5. Add the rest of your half-and-half and mix.
  6. Pour the mixture evenly into your eight 6-oz containers or two 1-quart jars.
  7. Place the jars in the yogurt maker.
  8. Add warm water to the yogurt maker, placing the water right above the yogurt line in the jars.
  9. Set the temperature of the yogurt maker to 95 degrees and set the timer for 36 hours. It is essential to stop cooking and move to the fridge after 36 hours. The L. Reuteri bacteria count begins to die when it cooks for longer than 36 hours, and you start to have a ‘weaker’ yogurt.
  10. When done, move the jars to the refrigerator to cool.

We recommend eating one tablespoon of yogurt before bed and working up to a 1/2 cup. OPTIONAL: Add a sweetener (i.e., monk fruit), berries, seeds, or nuts to enjoy.

After The First Batch

As you’ll see in the video, the first batch, made with the probiotic capsule, often comes out runny with a bit of a cottage cheese look – you’ll use this batch to make the next batch, and that will give you much better quality (smoother) product.

  1. In a medium-sized bowl, pour two tablespoons of the previous batch.
  7. Add the jars to the yogurt maker.
